Absolutely awful book or no book - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Reviews
This was definately the worst out of all the Harry Potter movies and I was diappointed with the first 3. At least the first 3 had direction and made sense. Goblet of Fire has absolutely no intended audience. It seems as if the movie relies on you having already read the books because there are so many holes in the plot it wouldn't make sense to someone who hasn't. However If you've read the books you will absolutely hate the movie because there is so much missing: important or memorable characters, scenes, and etc.
I'm so sick of people saying book fans' expectations are too high and there is never going to be a 15 hour Harry Potter movie. I understand that but the movie was only 2 1/2 hours long the LOTR was 3 1/2 hours so there was maybe another 1/2 hour to an hour that could have been added. If you're going to cut out stuff from the book there were plenty of things that could have been cut but weren't for example Rita Skeeter,Harry's infatuation with Cho, the whole Hagrid and Madame Maxine relationship, Professor McGonagall teaching Ron how to ballroom dance, and the Yule Ball. They don't really add much to the main plot and could have been sacrificed for a storyline that flowed better and made sense to someone who had not read the books because there was also a lot of very important scenes and details that were cut out including background on Barty Crouch jr. and his confession, Dumbledore telling Fudge that Voldemort is back and their ensuing argument. Dumbledore's speech at the end effectively made no sense and it didn't lead into Order of the Phoenix in any way because so much information was missing. It didn't convey that a war was beginning and the magnitude of what it meant that Voldemort was back.
I'm not being just nitpicky about missing small details from the books this movie was God awful. At the end of the movie I heard what must be the worst dialogue in cinematic history. Hermione:"Everything is going to change now isn't it?"
Harry: "Yes."
I must admit this part made me laugh hysterically in the theatre; even as a rhetorical question it sounds really stupid. The screenwriters should be rounded up and shot. They manage to make even moments that aren't awkward make me feel embarassed for both the characters and the actors who had to say all these meaningless lines. For example when Professor McGonagall is teaching Ron how to ballroom dance:
Harry:"You're never going to let him forget this are you?"
George and Fred:(in unison)"Never."
The movie seemed made me lose respect for some of the characters because of the way they were portrayed. Dumbledore has always seemed levelheaded yet he nearly chokes Harry to death when he accuses Harry of intentionally entering the the triwizard tournament. I've never felt that either of the actors who played Dumbledore did a particularly good job. The first one seemed way too frail and didn't seem like he could lead an army of ants with a pound of sugar much less a school nor could he in any way portray the goofy oldman Dumbledore that I had envisioned. The current Dumbledore seems way too cold and serious but at least he shows strength.
Hermione bursting into tears at the Yule Ball seemed excessively sensitive which was an unnecessary addition not even in the book and her argument with Ron was way overplayed.
Visuals were one of the few decent things in the movie but even they were only mediocre. The World Cup scene was absolutely an amazing sight it was ruined by the fact that we didn't get to see any of the match. It couldn't have killed anyone to add maybe a minute or two of the Irish team dominating the Bulgarians and then Krum catching the snitch. It was a major disappointment. The scene where Voldemort came back was also very disappointing. It was so anticlimatic. Voldemort wasn't scary looking at all and there should have been way more death eaters. Ohhh No a team of 5 guys who don't know its not Halloween and some freaky looking inbred without a nose are gonna take over the world whatever will we do?
