A disappointment, if anything. - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Reviews
Going into the theater with my friend, we were expecting the magic from Hogwarts to dazzle us in the same way as it had in the first three movies of the trilogy. Sadly, I was disappointed to see that there was nothing much holding it together. While I knew that there would be many parts of the book that would not appear in the movie, I also assumed that there would be some semblance of a story.
The plot was threadbare, in all honesty. Nothing really held it together and perfectly good characters languished in shoddy dialogue and a lack of story. At first, my friend and I suspected that the cameraman had Attention Defecit Disorder. Then, we realized that it was only the script.
The actors did the best that they could with such a horrible script and plot, but it came off all wrong nonetheless, particularly Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. While both were impressive in the first three movies, I found them somewhat useless in the fourth movie, especially Grint. The sole exception was Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody, who briefly succeeded in keeping me from turning this screening into something out of the old television show "Mystery Science Theater 3000." Gleeson was the only person successful in executing their dialogue without making me want to laugh, in spite of its lackluster nature.
The special effects and the cinematography are, as expected, spectacular. If only the dragons and Mr. Gleeson had been the stars of this movie instead of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.
The worst part was by far the lack of control that the director seemed to have over this movie. I cringed at how Grint and Watson spoke half their lines, the story was not cohesive, and characters (except for Mad-Eye Moody, of course) were virtually undeveloped.
The books are, as always, far superior to the movies, but in this case, I would advise pretty much anybody to stay far away and save their money until the movie hits the shelves at your local video rental store.
